Before I made my way to the Santa Monica Pier for Route 66’s spiritual end, I had to stop into the iconic Mel’s Drive-In a few blocks away to check out one of its official ends.

Remember how I said there’s one stretch of Route 66 that’s not open to the public? Here it is at the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Barstow.

I feel so lucky that we were able to film on base and that I got to chat with Corporal Anthony Cahiola, Operations NCO about its history. Not to mention, we got up close to one of the most unique Marine Corps logos in existence!

One of the most important stops you can make on your Route 66 journey is into Seligman, AZ. It’s thanks to this town and one man that we’re still able to enjoy this highway at all.

Angel Delgadillo was born here in 1927 and as a barber, he’s seen Mother Road through all its ups and downs. When superhighways threatened towns like his, he spearheaded a mission to preserve and save Arizona’s stretch of Route 66. In turn this sparked national and even international interest in preserving the entire highway.

I’m still pinching myself that I got to meet him and learn even more of his story. Check out our chat in our latest “Place to Love” episode – “Route 66: Arizona.”

I stopped into Uranus Fudge in Missouri, and now I’m learning all about coprolite at the Poozeum in Williams, Arizona!

George Frandsen began his collection when he realized that while museums had fossilized feces, they rarely displayed them. He’s dedicated his life to learning all there is about poo, and sharing it with any curious traveler coming through Route 66.

Can you believe Route 66 turns 100 this year?

To me, this road has always represented the best of the Americana free spirit, and I’ve loved spending the last three seasons traveling from Old Joliet Prison in Illinois all the way to the Santa Monica Pier in California.

Now that I’ve gotten to traverse the entirety of Mother Road, I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks to pass on to any other fellow road tripper who hopes to embark on this journey as well.
